Week 3 – Life in the details

Guinness commercial

A basketball soars to the rim. We cut to two players, faces locked in anticipation. We cut to another, staring at the same hoop – it misses! We pull back from the closeup to reveal this isn’t ordinary basketball, it’s Wheelchair Basketball.

The players are scrambling around court, sweating, fighting, scrambling, challenging each other, each desperate for the shot. A tussle for the ball leads one player to fall out of their chair – but it’s no matter, he gets right back up. He’s done this before.

Another player shoots, he scores. The sense of victory and accomplishment recognized in the shooter’s face. The guys call the game. As they unbuckle from their chairs, all but one stands up — they’re not all disabled, they’re friends.

Their commitment to playing with their friend shows their true spirit – loyal, unquestioning, full of character. To adapt to their friends’ physicality and learn how to play on an even level shows their true personality.

They’re together again, at the bar, enjoying a nice, cold Guinness. That camaraderie is a spirit the company holds dear.

Google Search Stories

How many times have we sat down at the computer, with Google open? How many times have we used the search engine synonymous with finding out a little more about the world? How do you advertise the world’s most commonly used search engine? What stories could it possibly tell?

Well, a lot. In this commercial, we’re treated to a series of searches that follow in an un-specified amount of time. But in these searches, we follow a journey. A story of someone going out into the great unknown for study abroad. From there, they find their way about France, finding local eateries, translating phrases heard by people they’ve run into.

The full list of searches shows the journey we’re on for 50 seconds.

  1. Study abroad Paris France
  2. Cafes near the Louve
  3. Translare tu es tres mignon (you are very cute)
  4. How to impress a french girl
  5. Chocolate shops Paris

In twelve searches – and only searches seen on screen – do we go from college student seeking to expand his horizons to falling in love, returning home, finding . a way back and starting a family. And all because we ask questions.

And all because that’s what Google does best.
